How will the Pass/Withdraw option affect my academic standing?

    Passing Grades

Academic standings are calculated when a student accrues 6 or more credits of coursework.* Grades of C or above result in a GPA of 2.0 or higher and influence academic standing positively. Grades of C- or below fall below a GPA of 2.0 and negatively influence academic standing. Passing grades DO contribute to reaching this threshold; however, passing grades DO NOT affect GPA. As a result, one’s academic standing will be based on any other academic credit that DOES have a GPA value.

    • Example 1: If a student on good academic standing has 3 credits of P and 3 credits of C-, their standing will change to warning as a result of reaching the 6-credit threshold and accruing less than a 2.0 in the credits that have a GPA value.

    • Example 2: If a student on good academic standing has 3 credits of P and 3 credits of A, their standing will remain good as a result of reaching the 6-credit threshold and accruing a 2.0 or higher in the considered credits that have a GPA value.

    • Example 3: If a student on good academic standing has 9 credits of P and chooses this semester to retain 3 credits of D+, the D+ would determine the student’s GPA for that semester and the student would be placed on academic warning.

    • Example 4: If a student on good academic standing chooses this semester to have all 9 of their credits changed to P, the student would be reevaluated with no term GPA. This means their standing would automatically remain the same.

*Please Note: Students who did not accrue 6 or more credits in a previous enrollment may have additional credits rolling into the current semester. These credits would need to be considered as students make decisions about their final grades for winter 2020.

    Withdraw Grades

Academic standings are calculated when a student accrues 6 or more credits of coursework. Withdraw grades DO NOT factor into these calculations at all. They DO NOT contribute to the 6-credit threshold, and they DO NOT factor into a student’s GPA. As a result, the student’s standing will be based on the GPA of the remaining credits.

    • Example 1: If a student on good academic standing has 3 credits of W and 3 credits of C-, their standing will not change at the end of the semester. Instead, the 3 credits of C- will roll forward and be combined with the student’s GPA during the next enrollment. Once the student accumulates 6 or more credits, the standing will be updated based on those credits.

    • Example 2: If a student on good academic standing has 3 credits of W and 6 credits of C-, their standing will change to warning as a result of 6 credits of C-.

*Please Note: Students who did not accrue 6 or more credits in a previous enrollment may have additional credits rolling into the current semester. These credits would need to be considered as students make decisions about their final grades for winter 2020.
